Are two runways better than one?

Gatwick airport is a public airport, hoping to make a second runway. At first, it seems good. If Gatwick has more flights, then London automatically gets a boost in tourism. That is just general logic.

However, there is a twist in the tail. Gatwick airport is surrounded by ancient woodland, and this is important for many types of wildlife, big or small. And now 75 hectares are now under threat. Yes, a whole 75 hectares of important woodland. 

This destruction is not necessary and shows how our holidays have an impact on wildlife at home.

Now let me draw your attention to the global warming problem. More plane flights mean more and more pollution like CO2, a greenhouse gas. A Boeing 737 aeroplane for a 926km flight makes 155g of CO2 per passenger. More on that here.

But what about the trees? They absorb CO2 and release some oxygen. (more on that here.) They are fighting for less global warming!

So should WE cut them down just for a single runway?
